HERBAL THERAPIES

Listed below are a few (of many) "herbal" therapies that have been shown through rigorous medical study to be of some benefit.  Please note, that the herbs listed below are not FDA (Food and Drug Administration) monitored or certified, so will vary by manufacturer.  

Given the lack of controls for these compounds, no guarantee can be made as to their safety or effectiveness. 

Ginko

bullet

120 mg per day (up to 240 per day).

May be of some benefit in preventing dementia (e.g. Alzheimer’s) and may help tinnitus (ringing of the ears). Supposed to be good for circulation.

Possible side effect is to cause bleeding so should never be taken with blood thinners.

 

Black cohosh

May be good for menopausal symptoms

 

Glucosamine with chondroiten

bullet

500 mg 3 times per day

bullet

Appears to help rebuild cartilage in joints damaged by osteoarthritis (overuse arthritis)

 

Valerian

bullet

450 mg before bed as needed for sleep

 

Feverfew

bullet

migraine prevention if taken on a daily basis

bullet

250 microgram once a day

 

Ginger

May be helpful for motion sickness

bullet

1-2 capsules up to every 4-6 hours

 

Saw palmetto

bullet

May be helpful for symptoms of an enlarged prostate. It takes approximately 2-4 weeks to see any benefit

bullet

Take 80-160 mg twice a day
